Derrick Morrison worked out of a sixth-inning jam as the Wolverines held on in the second game to earn a sweep of Hale on Thursday.

HALE - May 1, 2008 - AuGres-Sims subjected itself to some anxious moments Thursday, but held on in the late-going of both North Star League baseball games at Hale to earn a 12-8, 6-4 sweep of the Eagles.

Sophomore pitcher Derrick Morrison escaped a sixth-inning jam in the second game, retiring the final two batters with the tying runs in scoring position as the Wolverines hung on. Hale's Will Hjorth reached reached second base on a one-out outfield error, and Drew Compau walked. Both advanced on a wild pitch, and Morrison had to put in some extra time as both Tanner Shellenbarger and Roy Bernard had foul pop-ups dropped by the Wolverines.

Bernard finally got hold of one and sent it toward the left field fence, but a stiff east wind held the ball up, and center fielder Brandon Kelly caught up with it and held on despite he and left fielder Alex Lutz avoiding a collision on the play.

Morrison allowed nine hits and one earned run while walking three to earn the win, outduelling Hale's Tanner Shellenbarger, who struck out 13 Wolverines.

Hale led 4-1 in the third inning after RBI singles by Bernard and Christian Moody. The Wolverines tied it in the fourth as Art Griffore and Ray Lake reached base on a single and error, respectively, and Lutz added a run-scoring hit. A Hale error brought Lutz in with the tying run.

Griffore and Lake again set the table in the fifth with leadoff singles, and after stealing second and third, Lutz drove them home with the game-winning runs.

Griffore finished with five stolen bases.

Evan Caverly had three hits for the Eagles.

In the opener, the Wolverines bounced back from a deficit by scoring 10 runs in the final three innings.

Lutz picked up the complete-game win for the Wolverines (5-9, 4-2 North Star League), allowing two earned runs on six hits, walking two and striking out eight.

Will Hjorth took the loss, giving up nine hits and two walks. Eight of the 12 runs he allowed were unearned.

Kelly, Lake, Lutz, Jason Mathe and Sean Carrier each had two hits, while Mathe stole five bases.

Shellenbarger had two hits and two RBIs and Moody had a hit and two RBIs to lead Hale (6-8, 4-6).
