WHITTEMORE-PRESCOTT - Aug. 26, 2008 - Ogemaw Heights was a two-time winner at Whittemore-Prescott's season-opening tri-meet, sweeping the host Cardinals 25-22, 25-11 and Oscoda 25-8, 25-21.

In the other match, W-P topped Oscoda 25-15, 20-25, 25-21.

The Falcons were particularly strong against the Owls, which wasn't unexpected as Ogemaw had played in a weekend tournament and Oscoda was just opening its season. Ogemaw won the opening game with ease before the Owls gave the Falcons much more of a challenge in the second game.

"We played a little sluggish at times and had a hard time passing," said Ogemaw coach Diane Gillette. "Once we settled down and stayed focused we were able to execute some plays.  It is still early and I know the girls will improve and peak when we need them to."

The Cardinals and Owls split their first two games before W-P was able to hold on for the win in the decisive third game.

Ogemaw finished strong in its second game against W-P after the Cards were able to stay close in the first.

"We definitely need to work on our defense," said W-P coach Helen Loomis. "We're not anticipating where the ball might go and also hesitating on plays between team members.

"Offensively we need to  be more consistent with less hitting errors. Hopefully time will bring those improvements; the girls are staying positive."
