OGEMAW HEIGHTS - Nov. 3, 2008 - Tawas Area opened district tournament play in a big way Monday, sweeping past Houghton Lake 25-10, 25-9, 25-15.
While the Braves dominated every phase of the game, Kayla Wilson's serving proved to be the catalyst. In the opening game she took over service with Tawas up 15-10 and finished off the game with 10 straight points, including seven aces.
Wilson finished with 15 aces in the match and had another run of 10 points in the second game.
"Kayla served extremely well," said Tawas coach Carol Elowsky. "Her serve really dominated them.
"Now we need to go back to the gym, fix the things that were wrong and get ready to play Ogemaw Heights."
Jenny Jacques had a big game hitting on the outside, and Molly Stoll and Kaitlyn Challenger plugged up the middle.
Houghton Lake made a game of it in the third set, leading 11-10, but Tawas finished with a 15-4 run to end it, with Dana Kolnitys' tip providing the finishing touch.
The Braves (16-23-2) play the host Falcons on Wednesday in the opening game of a district semifinal doubleheader at 7 p.m.
"We know from playing them what we need to do," Elowsky said. "But to win, we need to be able to go out and execute it."
