CARO - Nov. 8, 2008 - John Glenn was pretty certain to win the weekend's Independent Swim Conference meet. The Bobcats didn't disappoint, doubling up the rest of the field. The Bobcats took the meet with 412 points, with Oscoda (201) taking second. Garber (189) took third, followed by Caro (159), Ogemaw Heights (144), Gaylord (141) and Alpena (134).
Oscoda
In addition to the runner-up finish, the Owls got a big day out of senior Alyssa Peters, who hit state-qualifying times in the butterfly (1:10.62) and back stroke (1:12.79). Peters advanced to the state finals in the fly in 2007; along with her return to state in that event, her qualifying backstroke time broke the school record. Peters took the league title in the fly and was runner-up in the back.
"(She) had the meet of her life," said Oscoda coach Jeff Rush. "(She) had been pressing hard to return back to state for butterfly and had a solid (ISC) finals meet."
The Owls also started off the meet with a bang, winning the 200-medley relay with a time of 2:20.91. Peters, Megan Crowder, Mari Businski and Elisabeth Billiel did the honors.
Taking top-six finishes were Brynne Raymond in the 200-free (2:42.14); Businski in the 200-IM (4th, 2:46.35) and 100-breast (2nd, 1:24.05); Crowder (5th, 6:22.33) and Raymond (6th, 6:30.96) in the 500-free (times converted from the 400-meter distance); Crowder in the 100-back (3rd, 1:18.86); and Crowder, Peters, Christina Delcourt and Businski in the 400-free relay (2nd, 4:39.95).
Finishing in the seventh-12th place range were Delcourt, Brittany Kaiser, Lynch and Raymond (9th, 2:37.74); Kira Tait in diving (7th, 197.15 points); Lynch (7th, 1:20.91) and Billiel (8th, 1:29.37) in the fly; Delcourt in the 100-free (10th, 1:12.07) and 100-back (10th, 1:26.16); Katie Killingbeck in the 500-free (6:55.32); Anna Kushmaul, Lynch, Billiel and Killingbeck in the 200-free relay (8th, 2:13.14); Kaiser (12th, 1:41.28) in the 100-breast; and Raymond, Killingbeck, Kushmaul and Kaiser in the 400-free relay (11th, 5:09.20).
The Owls' top diver, Kim Kaiser, was unable to finish but will still advance to diving regionals on Nov. 18.
Rush pointed out that this year's graduating seniors ran up a 40-8 mark in dual meets in their four years, including 10-2 this season.
Ogemaw Heights
Ogemaw Heights' day was highlighted by Erna Spannagel's school record in the 500-free. Spannagel's time was good for a second-place finish, which was also the Falcons' top finish of the day.
The Falcons also showed how they progressed through the season by beating two teams (Alpena and Gaylord) that they had lost to in dual meets earlier in the year.
"The team did a fantastic job this season," said Ogemaw coach Sheila Smiley. "Every girl made great improvements throughout the season and ended on a great note by placing ahead of two teams that we lost to."
Top-six finishers included Bailey Gilmore, Shaina Krieger, Lisa Alley and Mary Krieger in the 200-medley relay (5th, 2:35.06); Spannagel in the 200-free (2nd, 2:25.83); Laurine Shields in the 50-free (4th, 31.17) and 100-free (5th, 1:10.48); Mary Krieger in diving (2nd, 325.00); Krieger, Krieger, Shields and Spannagel in the 200-free relay (6th, 2:08.72); and Shaina Krieger in the 100-breast (4th, 1:27.80).
Finishing seventh through 12th were Alesha Wood, Ines Engelmann, Stephanie Brindley and Trista Garland in the medley relay (12th, 2:52.39); Gilmore in the 200-free (12th, 2:52.36); Alley in the 200-IM (7th, 3:00.41) and 100-breast (9th, 1:34.54); Mary Krieger in the 50-free (10th, 33.00); Morgan Dantzer, Alley, Garland and Jaci Clark in the 200-free relay (11th, 2:16.92); and Dantzer, Spannagel, Gilmore and Shields in the 400-free relay (7th, 4:55.81).
