Outlook: The Cardinals bring back 11 players from a year ago, as well as a host of newcomers that coach Ed Schulte hopes will get W-P into the win column.
"We're improving, and we want to continue to improve," says Schulte. "
For the first time in awhile, nearly all of the Cardinals' seniors return from the previous season. Lukas Earl is the team's top defender, but when needed is W-P's top scoring threat. Midfielder Jessica Dietzel, defender Scott Garnett and Ron Ashton also lend senior experience to the lineup, while goalkeeper David LaPoint also returns. The team's lone first-time senior, Ashley Tanner, has built a reputation in other sports with her hard-nosed hustle.
"We lost some seniors at key positions, but we have some experience coming back," Schulte says. "Our schedule to start the year off isn't as bad as in previous years -- last year we started off with (NEMC champ) Tawas and (runner-up) Ogemaw Heights."
Schulte hopes that the effort his team has continued to put forth through its long winless streak will eventually bring the Cards the reward of some victories.
"When we walk onto the field, we hope to play as hard as or harder than the other team," he says. "If we can do that, eventually something good will come of it."
