OSCODA - Sep. 26, 2008 - Oscoda came close for the second straight week, but fell a touchdown short of grabbing that elusive first win of the season in a 14-6 loss to Manton.

The Owls trailed 7-0 after one quarter, but pulled to within 7-6 with 9:17 left in the half on Thomas York's 6-yard touchdown run.

Manton opened up a 14-6 lead just before the half on a 10-yard pass from Ben Denomme to Cody Emery.

Neither team scored after halftime.

York, who started the season as the Owls' starting quarterback but was replaced by Justin Cain when York was injured in the opener, was back in the starting spot after Cain himself was injured last week.

York responded with a 99-yard rushing performance on 17 carries. He also completed one pass to Tom Schonfeld for 18 yards.

Dylan Kachur added 8 yards on 15 carries.

Schonfeld and Nick Smith each were in on nine total tackles, with Kevin Hill adding eight and York and Brad Niemann adding seven apiece.

The Owls (0-5) will try to break into the win column Oct. 3 against traditional Class D power Gaylord St. Mary (3-2), which lost 20-8 Friday to unbeaten Central Lake.
