PETOSKEY - Sep. 5, 2008 - Ogemaw Heights had the big play working Friday at Petoskey.

It was the little plays that did in the Falcons.

The Falcons connected on a pair of long pass plays that either directly or indirectly led to touchdowns, but a pair of two-point conversion attempts that failed were the difference in a 21-20 non-conference loss to the Northmen.

Andrew Funsch's 2-yard run with 3:08 remaining pulled the Falcons, who trailed 21-14, to within a point. Playing by the old adage, "Go for the tie at home, go for the win on the road," the Falcons elected to go for two points but came up shy on the play.

Ogemaw opened the scoring in the first quarter as Eric Noble hit Kyle Bellor for an 85-yard scoring strike. That play came shortly after the Falcons stopped a Petoskey drive inside the 5-yard line on a Conrad Laurion fumble recovery.

The Falcons trailed 14-6 in the last minute of the first half, but a 65-yard pass play from Noble to Alex Rose set up Anthony Carollo's one-yard run to cut into the lead. Blaine Powley caught Noble's pass for the game-tying 2-point conversion.

Rose finished with six receptions for 143 yards, Bellor had his long grab and Nick Thorson caught three balls for 48 yards. Noble finished 11-of-19 passing for 279 yards, while Funsch led the Falcons on the ground with 67 yards on 16 carries.

Thorson also had eight tackles and five assists on defense, with Laurion adding eight tackles and four assists and Funsch five tackles and five assists. Carollo, Anthony Zettel and Earl Bennett each had quarterback sacks.

Ogemaw (1-1) opens North East Michigan Conference play Friday by hosting Standish-Sterling, with whom the Falcons shared the league title a year ago. SSC (2-0) trounced Gladwin in its first on-field game on Friday after claiming a win by forfeit over Beaverton in Week 1.
