OGEMAW HEIGHTS - Aug. 28, 2008 - Ogemaw Heights hosted the first large cross country meet of the season on Thursday as 15 schools of all sizes ran the Falcons' home course.

The race is named in memory of former Ogemaw Heights track and cross country runner Dwayne Rau.

In the boys' race, Elk Rapids Jim Janisse (16:56.5) came home a little more than three seconds ahead of Cadillac's Evan Roycroft to take individual honors.

Traverse City Central (41 points), Cadillac (69) and Ogemaw (77) were the top three teams in the large school division, while Elk Rapids (85), Charlevoix (92) and Rudyard (179) topped the small schools.

The Falcons' Martin Nelkie finished fifth with a time of 17:31.82 to lead northeast Michigan-area runners. Other top finishers included AuGres-Sims' A.J. Baker (15th, 18:29.53); Tawas Area's Guy Cotter (33rd, 19:24.92), Fairview's Norman Berry (45th, 19:59.05); Hale's Ryan Herzog (57th, 20:56.75); and Oscoda's Buddy Jackson (75th, 21:57.07).

As a team, Tawas (336) finished 11th, while Hale (345) took 12th and Oscoda (368) finished 13th. AGS and Fairview didn't field the requisite five runners to qualify for team scoring.

In the girls' race, Cadillac's Kaitlyn Patterson blew away the field with a time of 19:00.53, more than 97 seconds ahead of second place teammate Katie Vandervelde.

Cadillac finished second to Traverse City West in the large school division despite boasting the top three individual finishers. The two teams tied with 42 points apiece, but TC West's sixth runner was 10 places better than Cadillac's.

Ogemaw Heights finished fourth in the large school division and sixth overall with 189 points.

Elk Rapids won the small school division and finished third overall with 101 points. Tawas Area (199) took eighth overall and Hale (359) was 12th.
