WHITTEMORE-PRESCOTT - Dec. 21, 2006 - Ogemaw Heights earned two victories at Whittemore-Prescott on Thursday in a four-way meet in which the Falcons and Cardinals didn't meet one another.
Ogemaw swept Mayville 46-19 and Tawas Area 66-18, while W-P split its two matches, beating Tawas 67-6 and falling to Mayville 55-23.
Mayville was ranked seventh in the most recent Division 4 state wrestling coaches' poll.
"We're still not where we want to be, weight-wise," said Ogemaw coach Darryl Keeton. "We had to shuffle a bit tonight, but we wrestled well for the most part. We had one weight we missed and had to bump Zach (Jameson) and Rob (Goulette). The nice thing about having seniors is that they just go out and step up to the task."
In a match that was closer than the final score, the Falcons didn't win their indiviual bouts big, they just kept winning.
The Falcons go the start they needed out of Scott Kimball (189) and Carl Worthy (215) and went from there. Both were matched up against top opponents, and both came up with narrow victories. Kimball outlasted Nick Birchmeir 5-4 and Worthy held off Tony Reece 8-3.
From there the Falcons got wins from Kyle Scott (112) and Andrew Funsch (125), both with pins; Michael Lentz (130); Bruce Vermillion (135), Goulette (140), Drake Killinger (145), Jameson (152) and Matt Franklin (160).
"We knew we'd have to wrestle well to beat them," Keeton said. "For the most part, we did that."
W-P had its hands full against Mayville in its loss. The Cards got wins out of Brandon Brace (112), Adam Javor 9130), Robert Johnstone (152) and Hugh Jenkins (160).
Earlier in the evening, Johnstone earned his 100th career victory during the Cards' win over Tawas.
The Braves, literally in the midst of rebuilding their program, got its only win not due to a void from Ian Savela at 285 against Ogemaw.
Ogemaw enters the new year with a 7-3 dual meet mark, while W-P is 5-7.
