2005-6 Season: 24-10 (2nd place NEMC); team advanced to state quarterfinals; five to individual state finals, three medalists
Head Coach: Brian Cunningham
Returning athletes: Chance Rattie (125); Adam Javor (130); Scott Garnett (140); Robert Johnstone (152); Hugh Jenkins (160); Dillon Lagrow (125); Brandon Brace (112); Mike Gusler (145); Tom Jennings (275).
Outlook: The Cardinals are as inexperienced as they have been in many years, as only six of the 18 wrestlers on the roster to star the year have any significant varsity experience.
"It's going to take a little bit," says W-P coach Brian Cunningham. "But these kids really work hard. I think you'll see things start to come together once we get into the new year."
The bulk of the Cards' experience returns in the middle weights, anchored by W-P's lone state qualifier, Adam Javor, who will start the year at 130 pounds. Robert Johnstone (152) and Hugh Jenkins (160), while Chance Rattie (125), Scott Garnett (140) and Mike Gusler (145) saw varying degrees of varsity action.
The Cards also get an assist from transfer Kyle Hucul, a Division 2 regional qualifier last year at Clio, first-time junior Kyle Garchow, and Dillon Lagrow, Brandon Brace and Tom Jennings, who mostly saw JV action last season.
"It's kind of hard to know what to expect when there's so many guys you haven't seen in competition," Cunningham says. "But in our first meet they showed a lot of heart." |
