FERRIS STATE UNIVERSITY - Feb. 10, 2007 - After Oscoda's narrow loss to John Glenn on Wednesday, Owls volleyball coach Linda Hennigar had high hopes for Saturday's Ferris State Invitational.

Those hopes didn't come to pass as the Owls lost all four matches at the tourney, winning just one game on the day.

Oscoda lost to Lakeview 25-11, 25-15; to Big Rapids 25-17, 25-11; to Harbor Light Christian 25-5, 25-13; and to Lakeville 25-17, 20-25, 15-13.

"What went right on Wednesday ... went wrong on Saturday," Hennigar said. "The way this tournament is organized it presented an opportunity for us to do well. As play progressed opponents of equal records were pitted against one another. We just did not show up; no one had a good day."

Hennigar felt that Lakeview was a team the Owls should have competed well with, and that Oscoda should have given Harbor Light, though they are ranked second in Class D in the state, a better battle. The Owls played against other third-place teams from other pools in their final two matches.

"We were more competitive against those teams," Hennigar said. "But we still did not play anywhere near the level of volleyball we had played Wednesday. We didn't place in the power pool and were eliminated from the tournament.

"The day was a real disappointment. I thought we were finally getting things together; we had played well on Wednesday and had practiced well all week, but for some reason we sure did not show up at this tournament. We were sluggish and non-aggressive, and gave up 185 of the 210 points scored by our opponents."

Leading the Owls for the day were Jeri Carl with seven kills; Mariko Yamamoto with five aces, 65 service pints and 22 digs; Margaret Negro with 14 kills, eight tips, eight aces and 36 service points; Emily Schwedler with 20 assists; and Aubrey Thurston with 11 digs.
