OSCODA - Dec. 16, 2006 - The Ogemaw Heights volleyball team bounced back from an early-morning defeat on Saturday to go 6-1 and take the championship trophy of the Oscoda Invitational.

The Falcons opened with a 25-6, 25-6 sweep of Standish-Sterling before losing a three-game contest to Whittemore-Prescott, 18-25, 25-21, 14-15. That was the last time the Falcons tasted defeat for the day as they went on to defeat Oscoda 25-19, 25-21, Gladwin 25-20, 25-24 and AuGres-Sims 25-8, 25-14 to close out pool play.

In the elimination bracket, the Falcons repeated their win over AGS, 25-11, 25-17, then swept Gladwin in the championship match 25-23, 25-10.

"It felt good to come out with the first-place trophy," said Ogemaw Heights coach Diane Gillette.

Leading the Falcons were Holly Wangler with 78 assists; amber Schmitt with 20 kills and 5 blocks; Jamie Lucas with 30 kills, 24 aces and 9 blocks; Jordan Foster with 21 kills; Renee Wangler with 18 kills, 23 aces and 7 blocks; Alicia Brown with 54 digs and Kelly Rosebrugh with 50 digs.

"I was pleased with the hitters in the front who adjusted to the blockers and varied their hits," Gillette said. "They did a good job reading the openings. Our serving was better, but we still need to fine-tune it a little bit more.

"The back row players did a fine job reading the tips and hits and also adjusted accordingly."

The Falcons (11-2-1 overall) travel Monday Dec. 18 to Roscommon.
