Falcons win another tourney

Ogemaw Heights won its third varsity volleyball tournament of the season, defeating Gladwin in the championship match of Saturday's Standish-Sterling Invitational.

STANDISH-STERLING - Jan. 13, 2007 - Ogemaw Heights has gotten into the habit of winning volleyball tournaments this season.

The Falcons brought home their third tournament trophy of the year, and for the third time defeated Gladwin in the championship match to do it.

Ogemaw started the day with a split with Whittemore-Prescott and went ton defeat Houghton Lake, Standish-Sterling, Gladwin and Arenac Eastern in pool play, then beat Standish-Sterling in the tourney semifinals to earn their second shot at Gladwin.

"Our serve receive has improved, which allowed us to set up several attacks," said Ogemaw coach Diane Gillette. "Holly Wangler did a nice job setting to all the hitters and keeping the defense moving. We still need to improve our talking on the court, but the girls are still working hard and playing like a team."

Alicia Brown had 19 aces and 39 digs; Holly Wangler had 12 aces and 76 assists; Kelly Rosebrugh had 11 aces, 21 kills and 35 digs; Amber Schmitt had 11 kills and 1 block; Jamie Lucas had 24 kills, 37 digs and 4 blocks; Jordan Foster had 14 kills and 37 digs; and Renee Wangler had 33 kills.

The Falcons (25-6-5) don't play again until facing Tawas Area in an NEMC home match on Jan. 24.

The Falcons' JV squad improved to 21-0-1 for the year with its win at the Tawas JV Invitational on Saturday. Harold Wangler's squad served 90 percent for the day, led by Jacie Lucas (87-of-89), Lauren Gillette (49-of-53) and Emily Walker (36-of-38).
