GLADWIN - Jan. 6, 2007 - Ogemaw Heights added its second tournament trophy of the season to its collection Saturday as the Falcons swept six matches in taking the Gladwin Invitational.
The Falcons defeated Oscoda 25-13, 25-12; Coleman 25-17; Gladwin 25-19, 26-24 and Tawas Area 25-20, 25-21 to finish unbeaten in pool play, then toped Coleman 25-15, 25-19 in the tournament semifinal and Gladwin 25-18, 25-14 in the championship match.
"The girls did a fantastic job playing as a team, communicating on the court and hitting the open spots," said Ogemaw coach Diane Gillette.
The Falcons' biggest challenge of the day came in the first match against Gladwin, when the Falcons came back from a 20-14 deficit to win 26-24. Holly Wangler had four straight strong serves and Kelly Rosebrugh served six straight to give the Falcons a 24-23 lead. Gladwin tied it, but Ogemaw took the last two points to clinch the win.
"The girls played with intensity and determination and never gave up, even when we were down," GIllette said.
Leaders for the day included Alicia Brown with 36 digs and 10 aces; Jamie Lucas with 29 digs, 12 blocks, 9 aces and 26 kills; Rosebrugh with 38 digs and 28 kills; Jordan Foster with 34 digs, 9 aces and 23 kills; Amber Schmitt with 3 blocks; Renee Wangler with 26 kills, 13 aces and 8 blocks; and Holly Wangler with 74 assists.
The Falcons (20-5-3) host Pinconning in a key North East Michigan Conference match on Wednesday, Dec. 10.
