STANDISH-STERLING - Jan. 3, 2007 - Ogemaw Heights rolled to a three-game sweep of Standish-Sterling in the North East Michigan Conference volleyball opener for both teams on Wednesday, 25-11, 25-8, 25-14.
The Panthers were playing their first game under new varsity coach Kristi Yenna, who took over the team a week earlier after Wendy Stein had to step down due to job-related scheduling conflicts. Yenna had been the junior varsity coach.
The Falcons provided a somewhat rude welcome to the varsity level, never trailing in any of the three games.
The Panthers had their moments of success, mostly when they were able to get the ball to sophomore hitter Ellen Walderzak, but the Falcons, who have designs on challenging Pinconning for the NEMC title this season, had too much of an advantage in too many areas.
Leading Ogemaw, which improved to 14-5-3 (1-0 NEMC) were Alicia Brown with 6 aces and 10 digs, Holly Wangler with 20 assists, and Amber Schmitt and Kelly Rosebrugh with 7 kills apiece.
