ARENAC EASTERN - Mar. 5, 2007 - AuGres-Sims' volleyball season came to a bittersweet finish Monday at Arenac Eastern as the Wolverines reclaimed one title, but lost another.

With the multitude of late-season cancellations, the Wolverines not only had to play their final league game as part of the Class D district tournament, but saw the tournament itself delayed from Saturday when the power went out at Arenac Eastern that morning.

The Wolverines, who needed to beat Arenac Eastern in the opener to tie Hillman for the league title, did just that with a 25-7, 25-8, 25-16 victory that ended the Eagles' season. The win allowed AGS to finish its North Star League slate with an 11-3 mark, and gave them their second straight league title after winning their first-ever championship last year.

The Wolverines took their semifinal match over Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy, 25-6, 25-17, 25-10.

Meanwhile, Bay City All Saints took out Saginaw Grace Baptist in similar fashion in the other semifinal, 25-8, 25-8, 25-23.

The Cougars, who have been a basketball nemesis for several years in district tournament play, turned out to pose the same difficulties in volleyball as they swept the Wolverines 25-14, 25-7, 25-4.

AuGres-Sims finishes its season with a 16-9 overall record and graduates seniors Chelsie Irwin, Toria Pendred, Jamie Taylor, Amanda Nixon, Alicia Wright, Jessica Stevenson and Sam Baron, who missed the last part of the season recovering from heart surgery.
