OSCODA - Feb. 12, 2007 - Oscoda put the defensive clamps on AuGres-Sims on Monday and never let go.
The Owls quickly took an 11-2 lead in a game delayed six days by last week's cold weather and went on to take a 47-35 non-conference victory over the Wolverines.
Barak Henderson blocked four shots and dominated the paint defensively, particularly in the first quarter when the Owls build an 11-2 lead behind nine points from Henderson and Jason Jimenez.
"He helps out defense a lot, no doubt about it," said Oscoda coach Scott Lueck. "We don't necessarily try to funnel people in to him, but we do expect him to stop the ball when they get inside.
"We still have to find a way to make baskets, though."
The Wolverines temporarily got back in the game in the second quarter when Shane Lynch hit a short jumper, Isaiah Kauffman hit a two- and a three-point basket and Robert Verdusco hit a short baseline jumper to make it 15-13.
Six quick points from Adam Dettmer and Jimenez's rebound of a missed free throw opened it back up to a 12-point lead, and even a pair of Verdusco treys only to AGS back to within 28-21 at the half.
The Owls could never quite shake the Wolverines in the second half, but neither could AGS make a serious run at a comeback as the lead stayed between eight and 11 points for most of the second half as the two teams combined for just 33 points.
Dettmer finished with 12 points, Jimenez 11 and Henderson eight as the Owls improved to 8-7.
Verdusco had 13, Lynch 11 and Kauffman nine for the Wolverines (5-9).
