Local bowlers compete at state finals

BATTLE CREEK / JACKSON - Mar. 3, 2007 - Standish-Sterling's Kyle Schmidt headed up the performance of individual area bowlers by reaching the quarterfinal round of the individual Division 3 state finals in Jackson.

Schmidt, finished fourth in the qualifying round with a score of 1308 (including individual games of 224, 201, 211, 212, 226 and 234). The top 16 bowlers then moved into head-to-head competition; Schmidt opened with a 204-179, 217-223, 246-163 defeat of Billy Bessey of Vandercook Lake to reach the quarterfinal round. Schmidt's day ended with a loss to Bessey's teammate, Travis Jenkins, 214-199, 192-180. Jenkins went in as the 11th seed and ended up as the state runner-up.

Ogemaw Heights wrapped up its first-ever boys high school bowling season on Saturday as Ryan Bragg and Kyle Turner competed at the Division 2 individual state finals.

Bragg earned a 19th-place finish with a total of 1208, including games of 189, 257, 164, 227, 208 and 163. Turner took 28th with a total of 1161 (228, 158, 175, 154, 244 and 202).

"For a first time team and a first time coach, I feel we did a very good job," said Ogemaw coach Mike Duffy. "Next year, I expect to do as good or better."

Pinny's Chad Skinner finished 17th with a score of 1210 (183, 229, 197, 179, 226, 196).

In Division 3 girls, Oscoda's Allison Bickel took 39th (179, 132, 190, 154, 162, 146).

Pinconning's boys finished 12th overall in the Division 2 team finals, while the Tawas Area girls took 18th in the Division 3 team finals.
