This past weekend we had some major improvements at the college track level. Mike McGregor, pole vaulting for CMU cleared 16' 5 1/4" and on film it looks like he cleared it by a lot. This coming weekend he will compete for CMU in their league meet and is hoping for a really big showing.
Lisa Brindley is off to a great start in the pole vault for Alma College. She cleared 8' in her last meet and says she is off to a much better start this year in her vaulting. Both this vaulters were coached by Tim Hansen so congratulate him next time you see him.
Jessica Rutherford threw shot put at her league meet last weekend in Louisiana. She had an improvement of 2 feet and threw 41' 2 3/4". She is very excited but even more so because now she gets to start outdoor season where she can throw the discus, her true passion.
Matt Edwards just contacted me and filled me in on his last meet or two. He competes mainly in the high hurdles. In his last meet he had block trouble and was in last clearing the blocks by far. In a race as short as the 60 hurdles, this is a big problem. He managed to pass a lot of people and finish 9th overall in the event, just one spot out of making the finals. He seems to be improving a lot though. That ends his indoor season and he will be in his first outdoor meet in about a month when he travels with the Alma team to Georgia for a really big meet in the sunny and warmer south. That is one of the perks of being on a college track team.
Have not heard from Emory Nelkie at LSSU but hopefully he is healthy and performing well.
Steve Manz heads into the USA National Indoor Championships in Boston on Sunday. This is the highest level competition there is and many Olympians will be in attendance. He is ranked 4th in the country going into this weekends meet. The meet is televised on ESPN2 from 4 to 6 PM on Sunday. The shot put is often a featured event so look for it and hope for the best. If he is in the top 3 he will probably get some air time. I am not sure what his goal is but I am hoping for a
68 footer. Steve was also coached in high school by Tim Hansen. Steve's high school record in the 12 lb shot is over 56 feet and now he is throwing the 16 lb shot over 65 feet. WOW.
