STANDISH-STERLING - Apr. 20, 2007 --Nine teams converged on Standish-Sterling on Friday to compete in the sun-kissed Standish-Sterling Sunrise Side Invitational.

Gladwin took top honors in a well-balanced field with 111 points, followed by John Glenn (97), Standish-Sterling (78), Beaverton (64), Whittemore-Prescott (53), Ogemaw Heights (44.5), Sanford-Meridian (35.5), Tawas Area (28) and Oscoda (16).

SSC's third-place finish was powered by a one-two performance in the shot put, with Keith Schmidt (51-0) winning and Mark Stawowy (49-0) in second, while Austin Collier was a winner in the 400. Also placing were Collier in the long jump (2nd, 19-5) and high jump (6th, 6-0); Casey Potts in the 100 (5th, 11.17) and 300 hurdles (2nd, 43.01); Derek Welmers in the 1600 (4th, 4:52.33) and 3200 (2nd, 10:23.00); Ralph Stelter in the 300 hurdles (6th, 46.26); Shay Irving, Ryan May, Ryan Pickvet and Welmers in the 4x800 relay (3rd, 9:15.50); Collier, Potts, Kevin McFarland and Trevor Trombley in the 4x200 (2nd, 1:36.16); and Potts, McFarland, May and Trombley in the 4x400.

Whittemore-Prescott's Billy Raushi was a winner in the long jump (19-10.5) and was part of two winning relays. The Cards' 4x200 team of Jared Dietzel, Jeff Pokorny, Raushi and Sean Siegrist nipped SSC at the wire in the 4x200 (1:36.16); and the same four won the 4x400 (3:40.07). Also earning points for the Cards were Kane Dietzel in the discus (4th, 115-3); Raushi in the high jump (5th, 6-0); Pokorny in the long jump (4th, 18-9); Jared Dietzel, Matt Ackerman, Devin Beach and Pokorny in the 4x100 (4th, 46.36); and Siegrist in the 400 (52.96).

Ogemaw Heights, with most of its seniors gone on their senior trip, took sixth overall.

"This concerns me quite a bit," said Ogemaw coach Doug Grezeszak. "But we are young and the coach needs to be patient. We did bring home 24 medals, though."

Sophomore Anthony Carollo won his second discus competition of the week with a throw of 120-2 for the Falcons' lone event win. Other top-six finishers were Andy Skowronek in the discus (2nd, 119-3); Bruce Vermillion in the pole vault (6th, 10-6) and 200 (6th, 24.63); Shea Smolinski (4th, 41-3) and Justin Brindley (5th, 41-1) in the shot put; Garrett Rodriguez in the 110 hurdles (5th, 18.02); the 4x200 relay (3rd, 1:38.25); and Zach Lynch in the 800 (3rd, 2:08.23).

Tawas Area's top finishers were Tom Domerese in the pole vault (2nd, 12-0); the 4x800 relay (4th, 9:19.65); Alex Revord in the 100 (6th, 11.35) and 200 (4th, 23.84); and Tyler Bischoff in the 1600 (3rd, 4:49.66) and 3200 (4th, 10:33.43).

For Oscoda, Trent Fouchey took second in the 100 (10.96) to Sanford-Meridian's Dan Rau, who broke a meet record with a finish of 10.67. Fouchey also finished second to Rau in the 200, with Rau winning in 22.32 (another meet record) and Fouchey just behind at 22.51.

Other event winners were Sanford-Meridian's Taylor Jackson in the high jump (6-2); John Glenn's Chad Skrocki in the pole vault (13-0); Gladwin's 4x800 relay (8:45.82) and 4x100 (45.57); Beaverton's Aaron Sleight in the 110 hurdles (15.81); Glenn's Tyler Wejrowski in the 1600 (4:45.75); Gladwin's Drew Smith in the 300 hurdles (42.00); Gladwin's Kevin Smalley in the 800 (2:04.45); and Gladwin's Jordan Strohkirch in the 3200 (10:17.88).
