STANDISH-STERLING - Apr. 20, 2007 - Gladwin turned in a dominant performance at Friday's Standish-Sterling Sunrise Side Invitational, winning the girls meet by nearly 80 points over second-place John Glenn.
The G's flew to a total of 151 points, followed by the Bobcats (73), Ogemaw Heights (64), Sanford-Meridian (63), Tawas Area (56.5), Standish-Sterling (51), Oscoda (39.5), Beaverton (28) and Whittemore-Prescott (2).
The Falcons, who were without nine seniors for the meet due to their senior trip, got a win in the 3200 from Heather Villarreal (13:16.54), while Maggie Edward medalled in all four of her events. Other top finishers were Kelsi Rutherford (2nd, 100-10) and Kayla Brindley (3rd, 96-11) in the discus; Rutherford (5th, 30-4) and Brindley (6th, 30-3) in the shot put; Edward in the 100 hurdles (4th, 18.46) and 300 hurdles (4th, 56.80); Kalena Franklin (2nd, 12.80) in the 100; Villarreal (4th, 6:06.29) in the 1600; Edward, Kristeen Soper, Selina Tabayoyong and Franklin in the 4x200 (2nd, 1:56.65); and Tabayoyong, Soper, Brianne Price and Edward in the 4x400 (3rd, 4:43.19).
Franklin's time in the 100 tied the Falcon's freshman record in the event.
"Minus our seniors ... (and) with all our league schools at the meet except Pinconning, the league is kind of looking like I thought it would," said Falcon coach Rick Frank. It will be a very competitive (league) meet among many of the league schools."
Tawas Area was led by Quinn Knox's victory in the discus (105-2). Other placers were Julie Enzenberger (4th, 4-6) and Bethany Britt (6th, 4-4) in the high jump; Erica Lundy (2nd, 8-0) and Kara Joseph (6th, 6-0) in the pole vault; Sandy Brandt, Brittany Combs, Alaina Nunn and Abbie Hutchison in the 4x200 (2nd, 11:46.36); Brandt in the 1600 (5th, 6:14.93) and 3200 (2nd, 14:00.19); Combs in the 400 (6th, 1:08.27); and Hutchison in the 3200 (3rd, 14:07.15).
Standish-Sterling's Ashlyn Gulvas set a meet record in winning the shot put (37-4) Kayleigh Nelson won the high jump (5-0) to lead the Panthers. Other top finishes went to Nelson (4th, 94-9) and Gulvas (6th, 86-3) in the discus; Danielle Milan (5th, 12-10.5) in the long jump and pole vault (5th, 6-0); Nelson in the shot put (4th, 31-11); Gulvas, Cousins, Alyssa White and Hinkley in the 4x200 relay (4th, 1:59.56); Noelle Lentz in the 1600 (3rd, 6:02.28); Milan, Cousins, Lyndsay Potts and Hinkley in the 4x100 (4th, 57.52); Lentz (3rd, 2:42.62) and Ashley Pickvet (4th, 2:54.80) in the 800; and Gulvas, Milan, White and Brooke Trombley in the 4x400 (4th, 4:49.59).
For Oscoda, top finishers were the 4x400 relay (1st, 4:34.06); Megan Zarachowicz in the high jump (2nd, 4-8); Angela Lalonde in the long jump (6th, 12-10.5); the 4x800 relay (4th, 12:44.28); the 4x100 relay (3rd, 57.42); and Ashley Schonfeld in the 300 hurdles (3rd, 54.00).
W-P got a fifth-place finish from it's 4x800 relay team.
Other event-winners were Gladwin's Elizabeth Willford in the long jump (15-2.5), pole vault (meet-record 10-0) and 300 hurdles (50.70); Sanford-Meridian's 4x800 relay; John Glenn's Tammy Sheehan in the 100 hurdles (16.76); Glenn's Stephanie Hurley in the 100 (12.57), 200 (26.61) and 400 (1:03.39); Gladwin's 4x200 relay (1:55.97) and 4x100 (56.04); and Meridian's Nissa Looper in the 1600 (5:39.94) and 800 (2:35.00).
