OGEMAW HEIGHTS - Apr. 16, 2007 - Ogemaw Heights hosted its annual team invitational meet on Monday, Apr. 16, three days late but with a bit warmer weather than the originally scheduled Friday the 13th date.
Both the Falcon boys and girls earned a third place finishes in the large school division.
The Alpena boys won the division with 439.5 points, followed by Bay City Western (414.5), Ogemaw (373), John Glenn (359.5) and Gaylord (266.5)
The girls standings were similar, with Alpena winning (493) followed by Bay City Western (384.5), Ogemaw (350.5), Gaylord (345) and Glenn (175).
Top finishers for the Falcon girls included Kalena Franklin in the 100-meter dash (6th place, 13.31) and 200 (5th, 28.44); Selina Tabayoyong in the 100 (8th, 14.67); Holly Mester in the 400 (4th, 1:09.55); Noelle Mester in the 800 (3rd, 2:38.48); Chelsea LeForce in the 1600 (5th, 6:11.41); Heather Villarreal in the 1600 (7th, 6:27.00) and 3200 (6th, 14:24.70); Maggie Edward in the 100 hurdles (7th, 19.35) and 300 hurdles (7th, 57.15); Jennifer Valley, Amanda Thurlow, Amber Schmitt and Kristeen Soper in the 4x100 relay (4th, 59.21); Edward, Katlyn Anthony, Tabayoyong and Brittney Stein in the 4x200 (4th, 2:02.83); Schmitt, Stein, Holly Mester and Noelle Mester in the 4x400 (4th, 4:43.70); Noelle Mester, Holly Mester, LeForce and Villarreal in the 4x800 (3rd, 10:51.00); Amber Schmitt (3rd, 4-5) and Holly Wangler (7th, 4-0) in the high jump; Brittney Stein (4th, 7-0) and Jennifer Valley (7th, 6-0) in the pole vault; Franklin (7th, 13-0) in the long jump; Renee Wangler (4th, 30-0), Kelsi Rutherford (6th, 29-0) and Kayla Brindley (7th, 29-0) in the shot put; and Brindley (2nd, 98-9.5), Rutherford (7th, 80-1.5) and Renee Wangler (8th, 80-1) in the discus.
Sophomore Anthony Carollo turned in a surprise performance by winning the discus with a throw of 122-2. Zach Lynch, Chad Avram, Matt Franklin and Pete VanOosten also won the 4x400 relay (3:44.40) by nearly five seconds.
"It was an OK showing (overall)," said Ogemaw boys coach Doug Grezeszak. "I was really impressed with Anthony Carollo winning the discus, and event that is usually dominated by seniors."
Other top Falcons were Mike Rose (4th, 5-7), Casey Smith (5th, 5-5) and Clarence Buhlman (8th, 5-3) in the high jump; Bruce Vermillion (4th, 11-6) in the pole vault; Shea Smolinski (6th, 40-4.75) and Alex Ecker (8th, 39-2) in the shot put; Ecker (7th, 106-3) in the discus; Franklin (5th, 11.78) and Bryan Williams (6th, 11.97) in the 100; Williams (6th, 24.80) and Vermillion (7th, 24.93) in the 200; Franklin (2nd, 53.91), Lynch (3rd, 54.95) and Pete VanOosten (5th, 56.88) in the 400; Erik VanOosten (7th, 2:18.0) in the 800; Mike Lentz (5th, 11:17.70) in the 3200; Buhlman (7th, 19.48) in the 110 hurdles; Roe (4th, 44.81) in the 300 hurdles; Avram, Williams, Jon Mahl and Vermillion in the 4x100 (3rd, 47.27); Avram, Williams, Mahl and Franklin in the 4x200 (3rd, 1:40.56); and Mike Lentz, Mike Morris, Erik VanOosten and James Padden in the 4x800 (4th, 9:28.60).
New boys meet records (for both large and small school divisions) were set by Alpena's Alex Elsenheimer in the long jump (21-1); Alpena's Mike Stender in the 110 hurdles (15.49) and 300 hurdles (41.96); and Sanford-Meridian's Dan Rau in the 100 (11.17) and 200 (23.15).
Ashley Hunault of Alpena was the only record-setter on the girls' side, but she broke three: the long jump (18-3), high jump (5-2) and 100 (12.30).
