Mio sweeps AGS, Oscoda at tri-meet

AuGRES-SIMS - Apr. 17, 2007 - Cold and wind didn't do much to slow down Mio AuSable's track and field teams in a season-opening tri-meet at AuGres-Sims on Tuesday.

The Thunderbolts won on both the boys and girls sides, with the boys edging out the Wolverines 67-61 with Oscoda taking third with 49 points.

The Mio girls scored 79 points, followed by the Owls with 58 and AGS with 39.

Event-winners for the Bolts were Joe DePore in the discus (98-5) and shot put (34-10.75); Corey Wright in the high jump (5-7) and 400 (54.98); Michael Kososky in the pole vault (10-6); Patrick Wright in the 100-dash (11.76) in a thriller over Oscoda's Trent Fouchey (11.79) and the 300 hurdles (45.25).

Wolverine winners were David Garske in the long jump (20-7); Jerry Ritchey in the 110 hurdles (18.10); A.J. Baker in the 1600 (5:17.91) and 3200 (11:57.37); and Clark Larson in the 800 (2:15.13). The Wolverines' 4x800 relay team of Nathan Trapp, Alex Lutz, Kyle Shanks and Baker also took first (9:43.63).

The Owls had plenty of relay success, winning the 4x200 (1:38.40), the 4x100 (47.88) and the 4x400 (3:52.40). And Fouchey, edged by Patrick Wright in the 100, came back to take the 200 (23.35), edging both Patrick (23.72) and Corey (24.53) Wright.

Other top Mio finishers included Aaron Kosoky (2nd, 88.4) in the discus; Patrick Wright (2nd, 20-0.5) in the long jump; Jacob Ray (3rd, 10-0) in the pole vault; Corey Wright (3rd, 11.92) in the 100; and Zach Pillars (3rd, 2:30.83) in the 800.

Other top Wolverine finishers included Ritchey (2nd, 5-6) and Doug Willett (3rd, 5-3) in the high jump; Brandon Kelly (3rd, 19-10) in the long jump; Willett (2nd, 10-6) in the pole vault; Trapp (3rd, 21.03) in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles (3rd, 47.25); Larson (2nd, 5:20.49) in the 1600; Jonathan Miller (3rd, 12:56) in the 3200 and the 4x200 relay (2nd, 1:39.42) and 4x400 (2nd, 3:53.30).

Top finishers for Oscoda were Andrew Long in the discus (3rd, 84-4) and 110 hurdles (2nd, 20.98); the 4x800 relay (2nd, 10:24.48); Justin Cain (2nd, 57.34) and Alex LaLonde (3rd, 59.37) in the 400; Sean Krausch (2nd, 46.63) in the 300 hurdles; Mitchell Davis (3rd, 2:32.84) in the 800; and David Wood (2nd, 12:50.13) in the 3200.

On the girls side, the Thunderbolts swept the top three positions in both the pole vault and 100 dash and finished first and second in the long jump, 400, 800 and 200 to built up enough points to sustain their margin.

Mio's event-winners were Kristen Kososky in the long jump (15-0) and 100 hurdles (18.50); Amie Byelich in the pole vault (8-1); Arielle Smith in the 100 (14.42); Casie Hanson in the 1600 (6:08.11); Tina Leimuller in the 400 (1:13.46); Kim Brown in the 800 (2:57.25); Katelyn Blair in the 200 (30.72) and the 4x100 (56.77) and 4x400 (4:50.6) relays.

Oscoda had winning efforts from Jeri Carl in the discus (92-4) and shot put (30-8); Megan Zarrakowicz in the high jump (4-9); Ashley Schonfeld in the 300 hurdles (51.80); and the 4x800 (12:19.83) and 4x200 (2:06.20) relays.

Kelsey Heinrich was the lone event-winner for the Wolverines, taking the 3200 run in 14:33.27.

Other top finishers for the Wolverines were Jessica Stevenson in the discus (2nd, 76-10) and shot put (3rd, 23-0.5); Hollie Allen and Christina Dady in the high jump (both 3rd, 4-2); Kelsey Chesney in the long jump (12-8); Stacey Wheeler (2nd, 20.98) and Lynsey Svanberg (3rd, 21.85) in the 100 hurdles; Jamie Taylor in the 1600 (6:24.02); Adrianne Swaffield in the 400 (1:15.02); the 4x800 relay team of Dady, Toria Pendred, Taylor and Wheeler (2nd, 12:33.16); the 4x200 relay (2:07.34), the 4x100 relay (3rd, 58.31) and the 4x400 relay (5:02.6).

For Oscoda, top finishers were Mariah Wood in the discus (3rd, 68-5); Schonfeld in the high jump (2nd, 4-6); Sarah Inman in the shot put (2nd, 28-7.5); Chelsea LaLonde in the 300 hurdles (3rd, 1:05.65); Brittany Lynch in the 800 (3rd, 3:03.72); Zarrakowicz in the 200 (3rd, 31.41); and Maggie Ungurean (2nd, 14:42.02) and Verena Madry (3rd, 15:48.09). The Owls also took second in the 4x100 relay (57.81) and third in the 4x400 (5:14.5).

Mio dominated the pole vault, with Megan Maier (2nd, 7-6) and Blair (3rd, 6-6) giving the Bolts a sweep of the top three spot, with Blair (2nd, 15:01) and Brown (3rd, 15.02) doing likewise in the 100.

Other top-three finishers for the Thunderbolts were Brittany Smutek in the long jump (2nd, 12-9); Tina Leimuller in the 1600 (3rd, 6:25.32); Maier in the 400 (2nd, 1:14.01); Kososky in the 300 hurdles (2nd, 58.27); Arielle Smith in the 800 (2nd, 2:58.32); and Hanson in the 200 (2nd, 31.16).
