Outlook: The Falcons finished second to John Glenn at last year's NEMC finals and have their eyes on taking back the league crown.
"We have lots of kids that are new, so it's hard to tell what we have yet," says Ogemaw coach Doug Grezeszak. "We seem to have a lot of depth, but not sure how good that depth is."
With nearly 80 boys turning out, that depth is sure to develop. The Falcons do have several all-conference returners and one that for all intents and purposes would have been last season.
Bruce Vermillion, Grezeszak says, "(I) expect to be the league's top (pole) vaulter."
That didn't happen last year because of a mid-season injury that shortened his campaign considerably, though he did come back to finish third at the league meet.
Ogemaw should have a strong distance running crew, with junior Tim LeForce and sophomore Mike Lentz returning all-NEMC performers.
Senior Zach Lynch and junior Pete VanOosten lead the Falcons in the middle distance events, while Matt Franklin is the top returning sprinter.
"Zach and Pete in particular are looking very good," Grezeszak says.
The Falcons are hoping that depth develops behind their quality front-runners to take back the league crown won by Glenn last season. Standish-Sterling and Tawas Area were nipping at the Falcon's heels for the second spot.
"I expect Standish, John Glenn, Tawas and us to all be tough," he adds. "Could be the best Standish team in a long time." |
