ROSCOMMON - May 29, 2007- The eighth edition of the Sunrise Publishing-sponsored Meet of Champions on Tuesday, May 29 turned out to be a boon for record-breaking performances.
Fifteen meet records were either broken or tied at the meet, including eight by the boys and seven by the girls.
Setting new standards (and, of course, winning their events) for the boys were Standish-Sterling's Mark Stawowy in the shot put (49-10.5); Sanford-Meridian's Dan Rau both the 100 (11.27) and 200 (22.41); Gladwin's Andrew Smith in the 300 hurdles (41.18); and Grayling's Nathan Peters in the 3200 (9:55.60). Beaverton's 4x100 relay team (44.52) and 4x200 relay (1:33.36) as well as Gladwin's 4x400 relay (3:32.33) were also record-breakers.
On the girls side of things, Gaylord St. Mary's Jessi Palmer set new marks in the long jump (16-5.5) and 300 hurdles (48.69); Roscommon's Megan Barber tied the high jump record (5-2); Beaverton's Brooke Priemer set a new mark in the 100 hurdles (16.45); Petoskey's Tia Penfold broke the 400 mark (1:00.15) and Gaylord's 4x100 relay (41.92) and Petoskey's 4x400 relay (4:17.46) set new marks in those events.
Medals were awarded for the top three finishes in each event. Girls medalists for local schools:
... for Ogemaw Heights included the 4x800 relay (1st, 10:56.57); the 4x200 relay (2nd, 1:51.54); Holly Mester in the 1600 (3rd, 5:33.24); Kalena Franklin in the 200 (3rd, 28.35); Chelsea LeForce in the 3200 (2nd, 13:20.67); Brittney Stein in the pole vault (3rd, 9-0); and Kayla Brindley in the discus (3rd, 115-3).
... for Standish-Sterling were Ashlyn Gulvas (1st, 122-11) and Kayleigh Nelson (3rd, 108-8) in the discus.
... for Tawas Area was the 4x800 relay (3rd, 12:10.24);
... for Hale were the 4x100 relay (3rd, 53.79) and Tarra Caverly in the 300 hurdles (3rd, 49.39).
