STANDISH-STERLING - May 20, 2007 -Standish-Sterling led four area teams Saturday at the Division 3 Region 27meet by qualifying five athletes for the June 2 state finals and earning a fifth-place finish as a team.

Swan Valley won the team regional title with 107 points, followed by Reese (90) and Saginaw Nouvel (74). The Panthers finished with 54 points, while other NEMC finishes included Tawas in seventh (40), Whittemore-Prescott in 12th (25) and Oscoda in 14th (14).

SSC claimed the top two spots in the shot put as Mark Stawowy uncorked a throw of 52-2 and Keith Schmidt was runner-up at 49-5. Other state qualifiers were Derek Welmers in the 1600 (2nd, 4:29.09), Austin Collier in the 400 (2nd, 51.22), and Casey Potts in the 300 hurdles (2nd, 41.11).

Tawas Area was led by its pole vaulting duo of Tom Domerese and Wayne Enzenberger, who both earned state finals trips. Domerese took the regional title with a leap of 12-6, with Enzenberger finishing third at 12-3 but making the additional qualifying mark. Tyler Bischoff earned his state finals ticket with a third-place finish in the 3200 (qualifying time of 10:01.25).

Kane Dietzel earned W-P's lone state finals spot with a third-place finish in the shot put, throwing a state-qualifying 48-2. Other medalists for the Cards were Billy Raushi in the high jump (6th, 5-11) and long jump (4th, 19-1.5); the 4x200 relay (6th, 1:35.00); the 4x100 relay (46.09); Sean Siegrist in the 400 (8th, 52.90) and Siegrist, Raushi, Jeff Pokorny and Jared Dietzel in the 4x400 (7th, 3:34.09).

Oscoda's Trent Fouchey advanced to the state finals by winning the 400 with a time of 51.00. Fouchey also earned the Owls' only other medal, taking fifth in the 100 (11.50).

Other Panther regional medalists were Mitchell McFarland in the long jump (8th, 18-7.5); Potts, Collier, McFarland and Trevor Trombley in the 4x200 relay (5th, 1:34.43) and 4x400 (6th, 3:33.86); Welmers in the 3200 (5th, 10:20.75).

Also earning medals for Tawas were Ky Barnes (5th, 129-1) and Ryan McArdle (6th, 128-2) in the discus; Enzenberger in the high jump (7th, 5-11) and 800 (8th, 2:06.00); Bischoff, Seth Philpot, Jordan Smith and Jacob Winn in the 4x800 (6th, 8:51.59); Jeff Janis, Tyler Klenow, Alex Revord and William Schmidt in the 4x200 (8th, 1:36.18) and 4x100 (8th, 46.70); and Bischoff in the 1600 (6th, 4:40.41).

State finalists will convene at Comstock Park on Saturday, June 2.
