LINCOLN ALCONA - May 3, 2007 - Oscoda's softball team earned its first two victories of the season Thursday, defeating Alcona 9-4 and 7-0.
"The girls played great," said Oscoda coach Mike Williams. "We tried to capitalize on the mistakes of the Tigers and it paid off. Our baserunning was good and our defense helped us take the early lead."
Riley Shelton earned the win for the Owls in the opener, and freshman Nikki Shugart tossed her first shutout in the second game, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out six.
"Shugart has typically been our game-two starter," Williams said. "She's gained a great deal of confidence and speed. We still struggled to hit the ball like I know we can, but we made the hits we had count."
Shelton, Heather Spenceley, Heather Patterson, Justine Niemann, Dana Kitchen and Kacey Doherty each had at least one hit.
The Owls improved to 2-10 for the year.
