Ogemaw 2-1 at Tawas tourney

TAWAS AREA - May 19, 2007 - Playing their fifth, sixth and seventh games in three days, the Ogemaw Heights softball team needed a lift.

The Falcons got it from freshman pitcher Kate Dombrowski, who came up from Ogemaw's unbeaten JV squad to earn both of the Falcons' victories in the three games they played at Saturday's Tawas Invitational.

The Falcons hung on to edge Whittemore-Prescott 7-6, lost to Brandon 6-0 and trounced St. Louis 10-2 to go 2-1 in the tournament.

Dombrowski earned her first varsity win against W-P, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits, walking two and striking out eight. After W-P scored three runs in the sixth to get back in the game, Dombrowski was able to retire the side in the seventh after W-P got the tying and winning runs on base with two outs.

"We were lucky to survive another bad defensive inning," said Ogemaw coach Chuck Wren. "W-P has a dangerous offensive lineup."

Colleen Wren had three hits and Jamie Lucas and Tiffani Rouse each added two.

A rough first inning cost the Falcons in their loss to Brandon. Lauren Gillette came on in relief of Wren in the second inning and gave up just two runs over the final five innings, but the Falcons were unable to make a comeback.

"We were tired after six games in three days," Chuck Wren said. "Lauren threw very well in relief."

After a long break between games, the Falcon bats came alive again in support of Dombrowski, who earned her second win by allowing just three hits and one earned run in the five-inning game. Colleen Wren and Berdan each had two hits, and Berdan's home run in the fifth gave the Falcons an eight-run lead that enacted the tournament's mercy rule.

Ogemaw ended the day with a 12-14 overall mark.
