The Oscoda girls soccer team was on the road Thursday for the
second straight night, although Coach Gary Schneider
may be sorry to see this week end. His Oscoda squad
blanked Houghton Lake, 1-0, scoring the game's only goal ten minutes into overtime.
It was the Owls' third shutout of the week and helped
them finish out the regular season at 4-11. The Owls
seem to be peaking at just the right moment as they
head into District play on Tuesday. The Lady Owls
will visit Tawas with that match's winner facing
Houghton Lake in the second round on Wednesday.
The Owls have been playing great defense all year but
their offense is "finally starting to click" according
to Schneider. "Our midfielders are starting to hit
the forwards in motion and that is opening up some
good runs to the net."
Senior Chelsie Sisk scored the
game winner Thursday night to secure the Oscoda
victory. Freshman Rushelle Sidebottom earned the
assist with a nifty "flick on" pass.
Oscoda goalkeeper Ashley Crawford came up big in the
second half and overtime. She finished with 14
saves but only made four in the first half. Oscoda's
back four of Erika Nolff, Krystin Inman, Jodie Astrom
and Katia Kotula had another outstanding match.
"They
covered everything and caught Houghton Lake offside
six times," Schneider said. Midfielder Aubrey
Thurston had another fine match quarterbacking the
attack and disrupting the center of the field.
