WHITTEMORE-PRESCOTT - Apr. 16, 2007 - Whittemore-Prescott got a pair of solid pitching performances in its North East Michigan Conference opener on Monday, earning a 11-1 and 5-2 sweep of Oscoda.

Darrin Scoles scattered six hits and struck out seven in the first game as the Cards scored five runs in the second inning and five in the fifth to earn a 10-run mercy-rule victory. Scoles also added three hits and two RBIs to help his own cause.

"We figured we'd have some pretty good pitching," said W-P coach Ed Mervyn. "My concern is scoring runs. It wasn't really an 11-1 game; their pitcher (Jason Jimenez) was throwing pretty well."

Torib Uchel had two hits for Oscoda and drove in Jimenez with the Owls' only run of the game.

Uchel also pitched well for Oscoda in the second game, giving up three earned runs on seven hits in six innings. But the Cards scored four runs in the third, with Brett DeBoever's two-run double providing the key hit.

Baron McBride allowed two runs - one earned - on four hits, walking five and striking out 11.

The Owls gave themselves a chance at a comeback in the seventh as Alan Poland and Steve Texidor walked and Michael Lamrock reached base on an error. But with the tying run at the plate, McBride forced a groundout to end it.

Seven Cardinals had one hit apiece, with DeBoever and Casey Braun's doubles providing the only extra-base hits in the game.

W-P improved to 4-0 (2-0 NEMC) while Oscoda dropped to 0-2 (0-2).
