MT. MORRIS - May 30, 2007 - It wasn't exactly the way Ogemaw Heights baseball coach Jeremiah Peace wanted to warm up for Saturday's district tournament.
It wasn't that the Falcons lost one of their two games at Mt. Morris E.A. Johnson (a team with 30 wins) on Wednesday, falling 10-7 in the second game after winning the opener 6-5 in nine innings. It had a lot more to do with the 12 errors in the doubleheader, including nine in the opener that made the game a lot closer than it needed to be.
"The first game was a mess," Peace said. "We made it close."
The Falcons led 3-0 midway through the sixth inning, but thanks to a number of untimely errors Mt. Morris tied the score. Ogemaw put a run on the board in the seventh, only to have Mt. Morris tie it up again before the Falcons got two in the ninth and held on for the win.
Ryan Bragg picked up the first-game win, pitching the final three innings and allowing two unearned runs. Anthony Betancourt pitched the first five, allowing five hits and two walks, and two of the three runs he allowed were unearned.
"Bragg came on to get the win, but Betancourt pitched a great game," Peace said.
Kyle Wangler had two hits including a double and drove in four runs, while Rob Goulette scored three runs.
In the second game, the Falcons rested five of their starters and fell behind 10-2 after four innings, but rallied to within 10-7 and had the tying run at the plate before going down.
Blaine Powley, Jennings and Eric Noble shared the pitching duties, with Noble throwing two shutout innings and allowing one hit while striking out two.
Offensively, Kyle Wangler had three doubles and scored twice, Jake Wangler had three hits and two RBIs, Matt Faiman had two RBIs and Tyson Dantzer had two hits and scored twice.
"It wasn't the way we would like to go into districts," said Peace of his squad that finished 28-7 in regular-season play. "Hopefully we played it out of our system."
