MIDLAND DOW - Apr. 28, 2007 - Ogemaw Heights' baseball team got what it wanted from its Saturday tournament at Midland Dow -- except, perhaps, for one more win than the Falcons managed. Ogemaw opened the day with a 2-1 loss to Rochester Adams, then turned around and beat Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood 15-3.
All the scoring in the opener occurred in the sixth and seventh innings as both squads played near-flawless baseball.
"They were as fundamentally solid a team s I have seen since I've been coaching baseball," said Ogemaw coach Jeremiah Peace of the Adams squad. "We put the ball in play all day and they kept making plays."
Adams finally broke through with a run in the bottom of the sixth against Rick Dodridge, who allowed only the one run on four hits and one walk with nine strikeouts in his six innings.
Tyson Dantzer's seventh-inning base hit scored Kyle Wangler with the tying run in the top of the seventh, but Adams pushed across the game-winner in the seventh with sophomore Eric Noble on the mound.
"He did his job," Peace said. "The other team just did theirs too.
"Situations like this are why I love these Saturday tournaments. There will be baseball at Ogemaw past this year and kids like Noble will have to be a part of it. You can't manufacture clutch situations and practice just isn't the same.
"Eric got a taste of what it's like to be out there with something on the line, just like these kids who are seniors and juniors have (done) so many times. That will prepare him for next year."
The Falcons gave up three unearned runs in the second inning of the Cranbrook game, but bounced back with a nine-run third to take control.
Matt Faiman had five hits, including three doubles, scored four runs and drove in three to pace the Ogemaw offense. Anthony Betancourt and Kelvin Page added two hits apiece, while Dantzer had three RBIs and Blaine Powley knocked in two runs.
"We hit the ball like we had been (before an week-long layoff)," Peace said. "Fourteen hits spread all over the place. Kelvin, Tyson, Anthony and Blaine all had their best days at the plate. Jake Wangler made a few more nice defensive plays at first; he really seems like he's going to be a special player over there."
Ryan Bragg pitched the first three innings and earned the win, with Noble and Powley mopping up in relief.
"Ryan felt like today was the best he had thrown, and I don't disagree," Peace said. We really pulled it together nicely against Cranbrook."
The Falcons (9-3) return to action at home against Gaylord on Friday, May 4.
