ATLANTA - May 25, 2007 - Arenac Eastern's baseball team got a hard lesson in underestimating an opponent in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday but bounced back to earn a split in the second game.
Atlanta, which the Eagles defeated 21-2 in a tournament contest a month ago, handed AE a 5-2 loss in the first game, but AE bounced back for a 15-7 victory that enabled the Eagles to finish at .500 in North Star League play.
"We came out very flat in the first game," said AE coach Mike Sanchez. "We'd beaten them easily in their tournament and thought we could walk onto the field and win. We just didn't play with any intensity."
Kyle White took the loss on the mound as the Eagles could score only single runs in the first and sixth innings.
The Eagles took a 7-0 lead in the second game before the Huskies came back to cut it to 7-6 in the bottom of the third, but AE scored seven runs in the fourth for a 14-6 lead and never looked back. Thomas Klopf earned the win, while Brian Langstaff struck out five in a two-inning relief appearance.
"The guys did a good job of picking things up in the second game," Sanchez said. "And they were able to keep it up throughout the game."
The Eagles finished the regular season at 12-8 overall, 7-7 in North Star League play, while Atlanta finished 3-11 in NSL contests. AE takes on Mio on Friday, June 1 in its district tournament opener at AuGres-Sims.
