Faiman to do double all-star game duty
It's a rare honor to be chosen for one of the coaches' association all-star games, but Matt Faiman received the rare dual honor of getting selected to play in both the football and baseball all-star showcases this summer.

OGEMAW HEIGHTS - June 8, 2007 - Ogemaw Heights' Matt Faiman, who just completed a stellar three-sport career that earned him numerous honors and a baseball scholarship to Central Michigan University, has been tabbed with the dual honor of playing in a pair of coaches' association all star games this summer.

Faiman will be playing in both the Michigan High School Football Association's 27th annual football all-star contest and the 26th annual Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association East-West All-Star Classic.

The football contest will be played Saturday, July 21 at Michigan State University's Spartan Stadium and will feature 88 seniors nominated from more than 600 high schools. Faiman, who is listed as a wide receiver for the game, was an all-purpose threat for the Falcons, but primarily played quarterback. Faiman is only the second Falcon to be chosen for the game; Kurt Buhlman played in the game in 2002 in a year when then-coach Larry Bellor was also selected as an assistant. Faiman will play for the West squad, which includes all schools not located in the Metro Detroit or Thumb areas of the state.

"Matt is a tremendous athlete," said current Falcon coach Andrew Pratley. "He was a big-play threat for us at all times and he made plays that to this day watching film we don't believe.

"His selection to the all-star game is only the second from Ogemaw Heights and is a testament not only to his abilities but those of his teammates as well. We are excited to watch him perform in the game as we know he will do our program proud."

In his career he rushed for 2132 yards on 281 carries and 32 touchdowns (as well as seven two-point conversions); threw for 3434 yards and 23 touchdowns on 198 of 398 passing; caught three passes for 76 yards and one touchdown; and kicked five extra points. He also finished his career holding 29 Ogemaw Heights school records, including nearly every game, season and career passing mark.

Falcon baseball coach Jeremiah Peace said he wasn't sure if another Falcon player had played in the game, but at the very least it has been some time.

The baseball all-star game will be played June 18 at Comerica Park. Faiman will compete on the West squad.

In his career as a Falcon, Faiman batted .469 with 11 home runs and 153 RBIs, scored 120 runs and hit 32 doubles and 13 triples and stole 130 bases. As a pitcher he went 17-5, walking 66 and striking out 191 in 123-1/3 innings -- an average of 10.8 strikeouts per seven innings. He had an earned run average of 1.93 and pitched two no-hitters.

Faiman also holds 19 baseball school records, with a huge 35-run margin in career RBIs over the second-best total that will make that record a tough one to break.

Faiman will be attending CMU next year and was signed to the baseball team as an outfielder / first baseman / pitcher.
