WHITTEMORE-PRESCOTT - Oct. 13, 2007 - Whittemore-Prescott lost three of four matches at Saturday's home tourney, but the biggest loss of the day wasn't to another team. The Cardinals had to play most of the day without Chloe Moraitis, who re-injured her hand in the second match of the morning and ended up at the hospital.
"A very disappointing day," said W-P coach Helen Loomis. "Needless to say, the loss of our strongest all-around player was hard to overcome."
W-P opened with a 25-15, 25-22 victory over Skeels Christian, but fell to Tawas Area 19-25, 15-25, Mio 18-25, 22-25 and Hale 7-25, 17-25.
Despite playing less than half the day, Moraitis had four aces, one off Leighanna Loomis's team-high of five. That may have been the difference in the second game against Mio, in which five service errors proved costly.
Standish-Sterling topped Hale in the championship match.
"My congratulations to both Standish and Hale who played awesome throughout the day," Loomis said.
The Cards (5-22-2) host Standish-Sterling in a North East Michigan Conference match on Wednesday, Oct. 17.
