2006-7 Season: 33-13-4 (9-3, 2nd-tie North East Michigan Conference)
Head Coach: Helen Loomis
Returning Players: Annie Thompson, sr., (S); Katie Eymer, sr., (MH); Heather Ostrander, sr., (OH).
New to varsity: Skye Charles, sr.; Willow McLaren, sr.; Chloe Moraitis, jr.; Corinne Crawford, jr.; Stacy Richards, jr.; Larissa McGeathy, jr.; Leighanna Loomis, so.; Chelsea Jasman, so.; Kayla Camp, so.
Outlook: The Cardinals come off their most successful season in 12 years, which included its first victory in memory over 25-time league champ Pinconning, a tie for the league runner-up spot and a district title.
That, however, was a senior-dominated squad. Only three players return from that team – setter Annie Thompson; middle hitter Katie Eymer; and right side hitter Heather Ostrander.
“We're definitely doing some rebuilding,” says W-P coach Helen Loomis. “As the season goes on we expect to see quite a bit of improvement. But it takes awhile to adjust to the pace of the (varsity) game and inexperience.”
The squad will also include seniors Skye Charles and Willow McLaren; juniors Chloe Moraitis, Corinne Crawford and Stacy Richards; first-time junior Larissa McGeathy and three sophomores.
“Chloe is a good, consistent all-around player,” Loomis says. “And the three sophomores will definitely see plenty of playing time.
“We'll work hard and try to repeat at districts. We have a tough schedule, between our league and some of the tournaments we're in. If we can keep our attitudes up and don't get frustrated, we should be ready come tournament time.”
