STANDISH-STERLING - Sept. 11, 2007 - Thunder and hail threatened the second annual Standish-Sterling Panther Lakeside Invitational at Oasis Lake on Tuesday, but the skies cleared minutes before race time and allowed competitors from eight schools a sun-dappled, if somewhat soggy, run.

Tawas Area's girls won the opening race of the afternoon with 30 points, beating out the host Panthers (46), Hale (86), Pinconning (125), Fairview (150), Oscoda (153), Gladwin and AuGres-Sims (161 each).

The Braves were led by Sandy Brandt, who pulled away over the final mile to win with a time of 22:14, eight seconds better than SSC's Karina Pierce (22:22). Hale's Ashley Malin took third (22:32).

Others in the top 10 were Tawas Area's Emily Short (4th, 23:45), Olivia Bolen (6th, 24:01), Abbie Hutchison (9th, 25:19) and Brittany Combs (10th, 25:29); SSC's Ashley White (5th, 23:57) and Kayla Hilyard (8th, 25:01) and Pinny's Emily Podgorniak (7th, 24:26).

Lydia Douglas (14th, 26:12) was Fairview's top finisher, while Jill Kalinski (15th, 26:42) led Gladwin, Maggie Ungurean (16th, 26:49) topped Oscoda and Adrianne Swaffield (23rd, 28:29) led AuGres-Sims. In all, 48 girls competed.

In the boys race, Hale edged Fairview 62-63, followed by SSC (71), Oscoda (116), Pinconning (119), Tawas (139), Gladwin (152) and AuGres-Sims (171).

Fairview's Titus Brown took the individual win in 17:57. Hale's Eldon Barclay (2nd, 18:19), AuGres-Sims' A.J. Baker (3rd, 19:14), SSC's Ryan Pickvet (4th, 19:37) stayed in a pack with Brown for the first mile but were unable to stay with the Eagles' returning all-stater. Pinny's Justin Frey (5th, 19:43), Hale's Ethan Parent (6th, 19:57), Fairview's Kessler Evans (7th, 20:22), SSC's Qwinn Shorkey (8th, 20:23), Pinny's Derrek Luczynski (9th, 20:26) and Oscoda's David Wood (10th, 20:34) rounded out the top 10.

Jacob Winn (13th, 21:01) led Tawas while John Brant (18th, 21:50) led Gladwin.
