MAPLE LEAF GOLF COURSE - Oct., 3, 2007 - The boys side of the North East Michigan Conference cross country race is all but decided.
Not so for the girls.
Ogemaw Heights, Standish-Sterling and Tawas Area are all tied for the league's top spot after Wednesday's second jamboree and head into the October 20 league finals with the first-ever three-way tie.
Ogemaw did everything it could to bring that about, placing eight of the top 16 girls in the second jamboree on Oct. 3 at the Maple Leaf Golf Course south of Pinconning. The Falcons scored 40 team points to edge Tawas Area (43) and Standish-Sterling (66). SSC finished first, Tawas second and Ogemaw third in the first league meet in September. The winner at the league finals meet, assuming it is one of those three, will claim the league title.
John Glenn (118) finished fourth, followed by Pinconning (125) and Oscoda (155).
"It was a total team effort," said Ogemaw coach Rick Frank. "Last time we could only place two in the top 16. We ran tough, really worked hard in the middle part of the race to move up with the Tawas no. 3 and no. (runners) and were able to get enough people in front of their no. 5 to edge them out."
Tawas Area's Sandy Brandt and Standish-Sterling's Karina Pierce separated themselves from the field early, but not from one another. Brandt won the sprint to the finish to take the race with a time of 20:59.14, with Pierce close behind at 20:59.70.
The Falcons were led by Colleen Wren (3rd, 22:09), Heather Villarreal (5th, 22:20), Brianne Price (9th, 22:59), Jorie Diehl (11th, 23:17) and Amber Lovett (12th, 23:18).
Other top Tawas finishers were Emily Short (4th, 22:15), Olivia Bolen (7th, 22:47), Brittany Combs (13th, 23:20) and Bethany Britt (18th, 24:47).
SSC's other top finishers were Ashley White (6th, 22:39), Sarah Schwinck (24:46), Heather Hergott (20th, 25:05) and Kayla Hilyard (23rd, 2:41).
Glenn was led by Melissa Skrocki (8th, 22:58), Sam Sweet (17th, 24:07) and Amanda Crowl (30th, 27:14). Pinny's leaders were Emily Podgorniak (10th, 23:02), Maryan Idzior (33rd, 27:43), Lynette Pashak (34th, 28:02) and Brooke McKeon (35th, 28:13).
Oscoda was paced by Maggie Ungurean (21st, 25:25) and Brianna LaNore (36th, 28:22).
