Falcon boys solidify lead

MAPLE LEAF GOLF COURSE - Oct. 3, 2007 - Ogemaw Heights, as expected, turned in a dominant team performance at Wednesday's North East Michigan Conference jamboree.

The Falcons took four of the top five and eight of the top 12 spots in the individual race, scored 21 points to easily outdistance second-place John Glenn (54) and most importantly ran well in doing so.

"We solidified many of our places for all-conference honors," said Ogemaw coach Doug Grezeszak, noting that if the season ended now the Falcons would claim three of the five first-team all-league positions and eight of the 15 first, second and honorable mention spots.

John Glenn's Tyler Wejrowski won the race, finishing in 16:54. The Falcon's Mike Lentz followed at 17:31, though the margin of victory was quite a bit less than at the first league jamboree. Martin Nelkie (3rd, 17:35), Tim LeForce (4th, 17:38) and Pete VanOosten (5th, 17:53) rounded out the top five and gave Ogemaw an insurmountable lead in the team competition.

Standish-Sterling, which finished third (94) was led by Ryan Pickvet (6th, 18:00), Cole Manning (24th, 20:31) and Qwinn Shorkey (28th, 21:03).

Tawas (110) was led by Guy Cotter (10th, 18:30), Jacob Winn (16th, 19:46) and Matt Hughes (30th, 21:08).

Justin Frey (13th, 18:48) paced Pinny, which took fifth (118). Derrek Lucynski (17th, 19:09) and Adam Patrick (27th, 21:03) also led the Spartans.

For Oscoda (146), Jeremiah Johnston (25th, 20:38), Kyle Myers (32nd, 21:26) and Kenneth Parent (39th, 22:46) led the way.

The Falcons, in addition to prepping for the NEMC finals on Oct. 20, are also ahead to what will be a very competitive regional.

"Practices are going so well, "Grezeszak said. "We are getting a lot of quality work done and seem to be peaking at the right time for the championship time of the season."
