Cards overcome slow start to trip Alcona

LINCOLN-ALCONA – Jan. 25, 2006 – Whittemore-Prescott overcame the loss of one of its top all-around players and a slow start on Wednesday to hand Lincoln-Alcona an 18-25, 25-17, 25-13, 25-21 defeat.

“After receiving a diagnosis of mononucleosis for Erica Loomis the morning of the match, I was skeptical of how we would do,” said W-P coach Helen Loomis. “I’m pleased to say all team members stepped up and adjusted after a slow start in Game 1.

“Katie Borushko especially did a great job filling in, especially on defense.”

The Cards were led by Madie O’Farrell with 11 points, three aces and seven spike kills; Stephanie Aviles with nine points, two aces, 14 digs and 20 assists; Ashley Foco with nine points and, five assists; Erin Grezeszak with eight points, three aces, 12 digs and eight spike kills; Catherine Daniels with three blocks and seven spike kills; and Borushko with eight digs.

The Cards (12-7-2) next play at the Mio Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 28.
