STANDISH-STERLING - Jan. 21, 2006 - The Ogemaw Heights volleyball team shook off two weeks without any matches by taking second place at the Standish-Sterling Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 21.
The Falcons swept Grayling 25-11, 25-12; split with SSC 21-25, 25-16; beat Oscoda 25-9, 25-14; and lost to Gladwin 21-25, 15-25.
"Te team did a nice job throughout the day on the service line and covering the floor," said Ogemaw coach Diane Gillette. "In the last match against Gladwin we knew we had to beat them to take first place. However we played too tentative and didn't attack the ball like we should. We played safe and they were able to pick it up and bring it right back at us."
The Falcons helped their cause by serving 94 percent on the day, led by Mallory Collins (36-of-39 with 18 aces), Holly Wangler (17-of-17 with two aces), Lauren Shepardson (27-of-29 with five aces) and Ashley Killinger (36-of-37 with six aces).
Mallory Collins continued to give an outstanding performance at the service line," Gillette said. "She has a very tough serve and the opponents have a hard time receiving it."
Also leading the Falcons (19-5-3) were Shepardson with 34 digs and 23 kills; Laura Budge with 25 assists; Alicia Brown with 18 digs, Sam Thorson with 16 digs, Jamie Lucas with 11 kills, Holly Wangler with 13 assists and Amber Schmitt with six blocks.
