OSCODA - Dec. 17, 2005 - The AuGres-Sims volleyball team faced some big tests Saturday at the Oscoda Invitational -- six of them, in fact.
The Wolverines, by far the smallest school at the tournament, split two matches while losing four, winning games against Standish-Sterling and Oscoda. Of the other schools at the tourney, only Whittemore-Prescott was smaller than Class A or B.
The Wolverines lost to Ogemaw Heights 20-25, 11-25; lost to Alpena 19-25, 22-25; split with SSC 26-24, 14-25; lost to W-P 24-26, 24-26; lost to Gladwin 22-25, 17-25; and split with Oscoda 25-14, 22-25.
"The record does not indicate how we played," said AGS coach Jeri Christie. "As a team we only served 68 percent, which was a major factor in many of our losses and far from our goal of 90 percent. The good news is, it's fixable.
"Other than our serving, we played really well and played with everyone we faced. No one blew us out, that's for sure."
Leading the Wolverines were Angela Porn with 21 attacks, two blocks and seven aces; Sam Baron with 22 attacks; Jodi Bilacic with two blocks, 37 digs and three aces; Amanda Nixon with two aces; Jamie Taylor with 66 assists, 18 digs, 22 points and seven aces; Chelsie Irwin with 12 digs; Charisse Morris with 18 digs, 23 points and nine aces; Toria Pendred with 13 digs and three aces; Alicia Wright with two aces; and Jessica Stevenson with two blocks, 19 points and five aces.
The Wolverines (1-4-2) host Hale on Thursday, Jan. 5 to open the new year and the North Star League season.
"We are looking forward to the new year with confidence and we're excited to get it underway," Christie said.
