ATLANTA - Mar. 3, 2006 - Not even multiple delays and a long extra road trip slowed down the AuGres-Sims volleyball team.
The Wolverines, after having their season-closing home doubleheader postponed on Thursday, traveled to Atlanta on Friday afternoon to take on the Huskies with a shot at completing their North Star League season unbeaten and claim the league title for themselves. AGS made sure there were no doubts, sweeping the Huskies 25-10, 25-21, 25-6 in the first match and 25-21, 25-16, 25-9 in the second match.
AGS finished at 14-0 and claimed the first NSL title in the program's history.
In the first match, AGS broke open a close game as Jamie Taylor served three aces in a seven point run, and the front line of Jodi Bilacic, Amanda Nixon and Angela Porn took turns converting Taylor sets into kills.
The Wolverines hit their only rough patch of the to start the second game, falling behind 10-4 before reasserting themselves and pulling out the win. Bilacic took control of the third game, serving out the last 13 points, including five aces.
Charisse Morris was 10-of-10 serving with three aces, Bilacic was 16-of-17 with seven aces and Taylor was 12-of-13 with five aces to lead AGS from the service line. Bilacic had seven attacks and six digs; Porn had seven attacks and Taylor had 19 assists.
Atlanta played its best ball of the night to open the first game of the second match, with Alicia Wilk recording several kills. But the Wolverines broke away from an 18-18 tie behind the serving of Bilacic and Morris and finished it off with a kill by Porn after the Huskies regained serve at 24-20.
Nixon and Sam Baron controlled the front during much of the middle game, in which the Wolverines never trailed. AGS took a 9-1 lead in the final game of the night.
Porn was 23-of-26 serving with 10 aces and seven attacks, while Taylor was 14-of-14 with nine digs and 19 assists, Baron had six attacks, and Morris had eight digs.
The Wolverines (23-4-2) stayed the night in Atlanta and were set to return to the Huskies' gym Saturday morning for district tournament play, opening against Arenac Eastern.
