OSCODA - April 10, 2006 - Whittemore-Prescott opened its North East Michigan Conference season Monday on the road with a pair of victories over Oscoda, 20-5 and 15-0.
In the opener, Kaylon Leslie paced the Cards with five hits, including an inside-the-park home run and a triple, six RBIs and three stolen bases, while Theresa Janish added another home run. Kristie Degesie had a home run and drove in three runs.
Kelli Barriger picked up the victory despite some early struggles with the strike zone. With the Cards up 5-3 in the second inning, Janish came in to strike out the side with the bases loaded. Barriger returned to the pitching circle in the third and allowed only two baserunners in the final three innings.
Barriger allowed just one hit - at two-run home run by Laurie David - walked seven and struck out six in picking up her second win.
Dana Shugart scored two runs for the Owls, while David walked twice and drove in a total of three runs.
Janish turned in a dominant performance in the second game, allowing just two baserunners and carrying a no-hitter into the fifth inning before MIssy Bell broke it up with a two-out single. Janish didn't walk a batter and struck out seven.
Leslie had another four hits, including a 235-foot home run and drove in four runs. Julie Janish had two doubles, Theresa Janish had a double and Sara Schmidt had a triple as the Cards had 16 more hits in the second game.
W-P (4-0, 2-0 NEMC) was originally scheduled to play Gladwin on April 13, but that game was cancelled due to a Gladwin scheduling conflict. The Cards next play April 18 at home against Standish-Sterling.
Oscoda travels to Hale on Thursday, April 13.
