Owls earn much-needed sweep of Alcona

LINCOLN-ALCONA - May 4, 2006 - It had been awhile since the Oscoda softball team had experienced the thrill of victory. But that all changed on Thursday, when the Owls powered their way to a an 8-5 and 10-4 sweep at Lincoln-Alcona, including a three home run outburst in the second game.

"I am happy to say that we had an all-around great team performance," said Oscoda coach Jamie Samotis. "Alcona is a good team who hit the ball hard at us, but we were tough on defense.

"We hit and ran and the girls played smart, aggressive ball together. I am so pleased to see the great ball players I know we have play like a team."

In the opener, Riley Shelton was the winning pitcher as the Owls bunched together six hits. Lindsey Walker had two hits, with Laurie David, Heather Walker Dana Kitchen and Heather Patterson adding one apiece.

David, Shelton and Heather Spenceley all hit home runs in the nightcap, with Shelton's clearing the outfield fence. Patterson added three hits, including a double; Shugart had two hits, including a double; and Heather Walker and Missy Bell each added singles.

Shelton also pitched a complete game for the win in the second game.

Spenceley stole seven bases in the doubleheader, with Patterson adding five and David, Heather Walker and Kitchen adding three apiece.

"We started out right in the first inning playing tough," Samotis said. "We sprinted on the bases and picked it up offensively. Our girls are starting to settle down in certain positions and it is great to see the confidence levels rise and our young girls make great plays happen."
