AuGRES-SIMS - April 20, 2006 - Oscoda bounced back from a one-run loss in the opening game of a doubleheader at AuGres-Sims on Thursday to score 10 runs in the first inning of the nightcap and hold on for a 15-11 victory to gain a split of a non-conference softball doubleheader. The Wolverines topped the Owls 8-7 in the first contest.
"(The Owls) picked it up in the second game and came out tough," said Oscoda coach Jamie Samotis. "Our lead gave us the opportunity to try some new positions. All the girls played well."
Riley Shelton picked up the win for the Owls, striking out one and walking two in seven innings.
Heather Spenceley had three hits and two RBIs to lead Oscoda's offense, with Shelton, Missy Bell, Dana Kitchen and Dana Shugart adding two hits apiece. Kitchen and Bell each had doubles.
"Missy had an outstanding defensive game," Samotis said. "Both catchers, Justine Niemann and Heather Spenceley, picked it up a notch, throwing out baserunners. Heather had many early heads-up plays."
Bell, Niemann, Kitchen, Spenceley, Shelton and Walker each had hits for the Owls in the opener. Shelton took the loss, pitching the entire game and striking out three while walking one.
"In the first game, the girls were out to have fun and play the game," Samotis said. "The girls has too much relaxed play.
"We still struggle with mental mistakes and relaxed play, but we can only get better."
The Owls (5-7) and Wolverines (2-10) play again at Oscoda on Thursday, April 27.
