Gladwin trounces depleted Owls

GLADWIN - April 17, 2006 - The Gladwin softball team hadn't had a chance to play a game yet this season, but you could have fooled Oscoda.

The Owls, with several players not playing due to the Owls' spring break, were swept by the Flying G's on Tuesday, 12-0 and 7-1.

"Our girls are much better than this," said Oscoda coach Jamie Samotis. "I'm anxious to get a full team back.

"Our team had several mental errors. I was happy with their positive attitudes and team support, but our skills did not show tonight."

Riley Shelton took the loss in the five-inning first game, walking three and striking out two.

Lindsey Walker, Dana Kitchen and Justine Niemann each had singles for the Owls.

Oscoda (4-6) managed just one hit in the second game, a third-inning double by Heather Spenceley.

Dana Shugart pitched the first five innings, walking five and striking out three, with Shelton pitching the final inning.

"I think we need to spend some time in the batting cage," Samotis said. "We had some hits, but pop-ups, lobs and infield hits don't get us on base. We need to lighten up the bats, get on base and start scoring some runs.

"All the girls had some good things happen," she added. "We just weren't all on the same page at the same time."
