TAWAS AREA - April 10, 2006 - Tawas Area opened baseball its season Monday, with sophomore pitcher Alex Verlac spinning a shutout in the opener before the Wolverines bounced back for a wild 12-10 win in the nightcap.
Verlac shut out the Wolverines on three hits, while Josh Thomas had two hits, including a solo home run, to pace the Braves. Justin DuRussel took the loss despite holding to Tawas to three hits.
The second game featured two ties and six lead changes.
Tawas led 10-9 heading into the fifth inning. With darkness falling, the Wolverines' Nick Garvie led off with a single and came around to score on DuRussel's RBI double. Farver took third on a fly ball to right, and scored the go-ahead run Travis Lee's infield single. Lee tallied the insurance run on a wild pitch.
Isaiah Kauffman picked up the win in relief of Jim Lake, with Farver retiring the side in the fifth for the save. Steve Stanley took the loss for the Braves.
Garvie had three hits, including a double, and scored twice, while Lee added three hits, two RBIs and scored three runs. DuRussel and Jake Moody each had two hits.
Scott Wesley had two hits, including a double, while Chris and Blaine Thoryk each had two hits and Stanley had a home run and two RBIs.
AGS improved to 1-3, while Tawas is 1-1.
