SSC wins home golf jam, moves into 2nd

PINE RIVER GOLF CLUB - Aug. 28, 2006 - Standish-Sterling won its home North East Michigan Conference golf jamboree on Wednesday, which in the tightly-packed NEMC standings was good enough to help the Panthers leapfrog from fifth to second place in the season standings.

The Panthers, paced by scores of 38 from both Brent Raymond and Zach Dziuban, edged Ogemaw Heights with a team score of 164. The Falcons had 166, while John Glenn, Tawas Area and Pinconning all had scores of 171. Glenn took third and Tawas fourth based on the score of their fifth golfer (the top four scores are used for the overall team score). Oscoda took sixth with 194.

"Brent has been our most steady player," said SSC coach Alan Hover.

John Glenn's Chuck Baumer, Ogemaw's Andy Kish and Tawas Area's Blair Conklin tied for match medalist honors with scores of 37. Raymond and Dziuban tied for fourth overall, The Falcons' Pete VanOosten Braves' Matt Flory and Pinny's Adam Schumacher tied for sixth with 40. Ogemaw's Josh Phillips (41) and Pinny's Phil Ott (43) rounded out the top 10.

Ogemaw leads the NEMC golf standings with four team points after three league jamborees. SSC follows with nine, Glenn with 10, Tawas 11 and Pinconning 12. '

In other golf highlights last week:

The Falcons and Tawas tied for the top spot at the Gladwin Invitational, with Ogemaw winning the championship trophy based on tiebreak criteria. The Falcons' Pete VanOosten, Robbie Kish and Josh Phillips each shot 79 at the 18-hole tourney. Ogemaw Heights defeated Roscommon 154-162 behind scores of 36 from Van Oosten and 38 from Andy Kish on Aug. 29 and followed that up with a 155-191 defeat of Houghton Lake on Aug. 30. Kish and VanOosten tied for medalist honors with 37. The Falcon JV golfers topped Houghton Lake 184-235 behond Rob Goulette's 40.

Standish-Sterling took fourth out of 24 teams at Farwell, with Raymond shooting an 18-hole total of 80, good for a top-10 finish and a medal. Justin Goike shot a 76 as the Panthers took sixth out of 11 squads at the Gladwin Invitational.

John Glenn took fourth and Pinconning fifth at the Bay County Tournament on Aug. 30. Ott tied for third with a score of 78, landing him a spot on the All-County team. Pinconning also took third at the Gladwin Invitational.
