Falcons build early NEMC lead with golf wins
 
 

WEST BRANCH COUNTRY CLUB - Aug. 24, 2005 - Ogemaw Heights, which came from behind last season to win the North East Michigan Conference golf championship, built a big early lead this week by winning the first two NEMC jamborees of the season.

The Falcons, who topped the six league clubs on Monday at Maple Leaf, took advantage of their home greens by coasting to a 13-stroke victory over second-place Standish-Sterling on Thursday with a score of 162.

SSC followed with 175, John Glenn with 176, Pinconning with 178, Tawas Area with 179 and Oscoda with 204.

Josh Phillips, last season's overall defending league champ, was the match medalist with a score of 36, matching his performance from Monday.

"The team played well today," said Ogemaw coach John Thibault.

Pete VanOosten turned in the day's second-best score with 38, followed by Tawas Area's Rick Penman and Standish-Sterling's Brent Raymond (40), Pinconning's Adam Schumacher (41) and a three-way tie for sixth between John Glenn's Chuck Baumer and John Kendall and Oscoda's Alan Poland (42).

Also scoring for the Falcons were Andy Kish (43) and Rob Kish (45).

At Monday's meet, which was hosted by Pinconning, the Falcons' score of 163 was two strokes better than Tawas Area's 165. Pinny finished third (167), followed by Glenn (177), Oscoda 188) and SSC (190).

Top individuals after Ogemaw's Phillips were Andy Kish (38), Tawas Area's Penman and Pinny's B. Poniatowski (39) and a three golfers (Penman and Matt Flory of Tawas and SSC's Raymond) at 40.
